The constant demands from the fashion system push the most creative researchers in the tanning district to study new ideas to best interpret these needs in stylistic research. From this necessity comes the new “Piuma” line launched by Leather Kem, capable of meeting the needs of the most renowned brands seeking garments and leather goods that are not only elegant but also lightweight. Successfully designing such products means overcoming the challenge of leather’s specific weight and softness, which require cutting-edge processing while preserving the artisanal appeal of truly exclusive items.

“Our company has always paid close attention to the leather and finished goods markets,” says Federico Giglioli, owner of the Pisa-based Leather Kem. “In recent years, we have been persistently researching specific chemical products to create leathers, both for leather goods and clothing, that meet specific lightness requirements. Our research then shifted to applying these chemicals to leather. Thanks to this immense effort, both in terms of human and technological resources, we have developed processes to produce leathers with an extremely low specific weight. This is how the ‘Piuma’ line was born.”

Leather Kem, located in Ponte a Egola in the province of Pisa, offers specialized technical services combined with research for the development and production of new articles, complying with the technical specifications required by the market and the strictest European regulations. The product lines meet technical requirements for every type of processing, providing solutions for each phase of the tanning process, from the beamhouse to the crust stage.

“Our relationships with clients, especially in terms of experimentation, are fundamental,” emphasizes Federico Giglioli. “The continuous exchange of ideas allows us to obtain ever-new, customized, and cutting-edge samples. The process for creating ‘Piuma’ articles can be applied to chrome-tanned leathers but is particularly effective on leathers tanned with natural vegetable extracts, achieving the same lightness and softness. It is precisely these materials that have generated the greatest interest”.

Producing leathers with these high-quality characteristics requires the use of excellent products capable of meeting specific production needs. Quality, innovation, and environmental responsibility form the mission of the Tuscan company, which has thus become a benchmark in the sector both nationally and internationally.

“The leathers processed with these formulations, at final thicknesses of 1.2 – 1.3 mm, have a specific weight that varies, depending on the type of leather, from 650 to 700 grams per square meter,” explains Federico Giglioli. “Lightness, softness, a warm and silky touch, and vibrant colors are the main characteristics imparted to full-grain leathers, which are even more pronounced when creating Nubuck articles. In recent months,” he continues, “we have also successfully applied this technology to Metal-Free leathers, meaning leathers free from heavy metals, ensuring that the process’s characteristics remain unchanged even in more innovative production concepts”.

With its revolutionary “Piuma” project, Leather Kem once again proves that it is possible to innovate while respecting the environment, adding value to leather—an exclusive material that opens new avenues for applications in fashion and beyond.
